“Together in Progress”: Cardiff University unveils new simple yet flexible identity
Cardiff University, the highest-ranked university in Wales, has been an example of academic excellence and eminent research on a global scale for years now. In order to establish a stronger and solid identity as a first-choice educational institution, in an era of an increasingly challenging financial and cultural reality, Cardiff University engaged in a process of in depth rebranding.
Aiming to attract the brightest minds and staff, they decided to work with Only Studio in order to transform their visual identity into a confident and contemporary one. The newly unveiled brand strategy was named 'Together in Progress', reflecting the university's forward-thinking ethos and collective commitment to shaping a better future.
This strategy was shaped based on a distinctive student proposition that sets Cardiff University apart. Focusing on cultivating an open, supportive and intellectually vibrant community, the university strives to build a collective journey of progress. In-house teams and Only studio have been working tirelessly to form an identity that reflects these values. It is applied gradually and at scale across campus, colleges, services and campaigns.
Of course, central to this revamp is once again typography. The combination of Darby, a contemporary typeface with simple serifs, and Marr Sans not only nods to the institution's heritage but positions it at the forefront of innovation. Also, in support of the Welsh Language Standards, Only worked with Commercial Type to extend the typefaces and include bespoke glyphs common to the language. The glyphs highlight the university’s proud Welsh heritage and aid readability across dual language applications.
The new visual language, simple and flexible, elevates Cardiff University to the top-tier of academic institutions but also presents it as the welcoming community it is. This approach introduces coherence and consistency to university communications, underlining its commitment to excellence and inclusivity.
'Together in Progress' is not just a slogan but a testament to the institution's unwavering dedication to collective advancement and academic distinction.
