Earth day 2020: Garamond Warming is the world’s first flooded typeface ever
On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans, 10% of the U.S. population at the time, took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet and history was made in an instant.
The first Earth Day in 1970 launched a wave of action, including the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States and beyond and credited with launching the modern environmental movement.
As the coronavirus pandemic reshapes our economy, the theme for the planet’s largest civic event, Earth Day 2020, is urgent climate action.
“The enormous challenge -and vast opportunities- of action on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary. Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable” notes Earth Day.
So how do you tackle climate change through typography? Yiğit Karagöz may have one answer available to all.
Karagöz, senior art director at agency Scholz & Friends in Hamburg and designer of Themostpowerfulfont.com for humanitarian organisation Support to Life before the 2018 G20 Summit, has released a free downloadable font aptly named Garamond Warming with flooded letterforms making the message for climate action visible at first sight.
The awarded art director has launched his own typographic artivism online with his drowning fonr in use on Instagram.
Through the posts Karagöz reminds us of the green agenda through type design with real headlines about climate, an essential reading on their own, featuring “%100 reused posts which are quoted from activists” such as Greta Thunberg.
Per Ad Week, Karagöz conceived the use of a Garamond-style typeface as a form of design recycling.
“That’s why I picked that one. Then I tried to find a tweak to give it the impression that it’s drowning” says Karagöz who uses Instagram to inform everyone on humanity’s most challenging issue ever.
