Graphic Stories 08: Visual Communication is all about Tolerance
The 8th International Conference on Visual Communication, Graphic Stories, is on!
This year’s creative fest is to be held between 18-20 of March, in Nicosia, Cyprus having Tolerance as its main concept.
“Tolerance is an important moral virtue that inspires not only respect for and acceptance of diversity, but at the same time an attitude of life that can contribute to both individual happiness and prosperity, as well as to the harmonious and peaceful coexistence of the people on Earth” notes Aggeliki Athanasiadi, the force behind Graphic Stories, the conference that has been selected as one of the best festivals events festivals in Europe by the European Festivals Association [EFA] and was awarded the honorary seal of quality of Europe EFFE Label for the period 2019-2021.
Addressed to all creatives in the field of visual communication, applied and visual arts this year's Graphic Stories includes eight lectures, three creative workshops, an international poster exhibition featuring designers from Cyprus and abroad and an interactive installation.
Following is the program of the conference that kicks off on the 18th of March in live and online mode via streaming.
The lectures
• Yossi Lemel - Social Design
The world-renowned and award-winning designer and academic from Israel will take us to an emotional journey to the land of inspiration in the footsteps of icons, logos, emblems, signs, brands and concepts through a description of the sources of his lnfluences in art and design going through his engaged social-political works in the last 30 years.
• Andreas Brandus - Branding
Founder and Creative Director of Brandus creative office, having a long creative career in the field of visual communication has collaborated with some of the largest brands internationally. He will talk about branding by identifying branding tolerance groups for a successful creative strategy.
• Babis Schoinas - Pricing
Having a creative course for more than 20 years in the field of design and publishing, Babis will share his knowledge and experience on the always current and burning issue of pricing based on the value of each creative work.
• Agamemnon Tatsis - Copyright
The distinguished lawyer Agamemnon Tatsis will talk about a timeless issue that concerns every designer - copyright. What rules and restrictions apply to copyright, and in what ways and how can a creative professional protect his work from malicious intent and use?
• Rozina Vavetsi - Graphic Design: The good the bad and the ugly
Graphic designer, associate professor and Chair of the Department of Digital Art and Design at New York Tech, she will talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of graphic design.
• Costas Mantzalos - Optical culture
Dean of the School of Arts, Communication and Cultural Studies at Frederick University, he will speak on the promotion of cultural awareness and understanding of visual culture through the teaching of art and design.
• PIN | Petros Papapetrou - Cartoon, sketch, satire and humor
The well-known and popular cartoonist will talk about what is cartoon, sketch, satire and humor, as well as the role of cartoon in the Cypriot press, the current state of cartoon publications and what makes a cartoon to be successful and win over the reader.
• Panagiotis Voulgaris - Challenges, requirements & difficulties
Assistant Professor of Graphic Arts at Alexander College but also a professional with many years of experience in the field of visual communication, he will talk about the two-way relationship between education and the business-business world, the challenges, requirements and difficulties of the profession.
The workshops
• Branding by Andreas Brandus
The workshop will present a comprehensive approach to branding, based on the principles developed and used in Business Brand Strategy. The main goal is to give the modern designer / advertiser the equipment that will help him to effectively create and shape the visual identity and communication of a brand while always remaining up to date and in demand.
• Pricing by Babis Schoinas
The workshop will delve into costing techniques with examples, simple scripts with short dialogues and roleplay at all stages. Different possible approaches for the pricing of creative work will be sought, while methods of bracketing, anchor pricing and how to achieve good communication and smooth cooperation with the client will be discussed.
• Children's Workshop by Panagiota Michael
Subject: Tolerance - Through this Animation Workshop, children are asked to explore the concept of diversity and convey positive messages to the public. The little creators will have the opportunity to make their own cartoon characters, inspired by the animal kingdom. The children's drawings will be used to create a short film of about 3 minutes using the Stop Motion technique.
Also, during this year's GS8 the 6th International Poster Exhibition & Awards under the “Tolerance” theme is to be unveiled to the public during which the six winners of contest will be awarded and the poster exhibition consisting of the 50 distinctive posters of the contest plus 15 artworks by acclaimed designers aim to bring this year's Tolerance theme into the limelight.
“The contest received a total of 1420 entries from 45 countries, a new record number for the event, which makes the contest a global benchmark in the field of visual communication ” notes Athanasiadi of GS8 that once again aims to cultivate visual literacy and the perceptual development of critical thinking about contemporary visual arts and related issues, both locally and internationally.
