Have a very Merry Christmas like the 70s with Linda Powell's festive posters
Linda Powell's graphic design for Herman Miller's festive posters are a vintage beauty of holiday elegance.
Designed for the annual Herman Miller employee Christmas party, the posters are distinctive as possible. Instead of designing one poster incorporating many sounds, Powell designed four posters for the "Sounds of Christmas" 1978 theme, each focusing on one sound: Ho Ho Ho, Fa la la la la, Smack, and Jingle.
Graphic designer and educator Linda Powell received her Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design and a Masters degree in Education from Western Michigan University and spent fifteen years working as a graphic designer and Senior Communications Manager at renowned furniture company Herman Miller, Inc. where she was awarded Outstanding Employee and was a part of the group that received the Outstanding Team Award during her tenure there.
"In 1991, Powell switched gears and began working as an Associate Professor at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI where she worked with upperclassmen in the design program. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, notably the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Fellow Award-the highest honor offered to members of the graphic design community. Powell's current work is a reflection of her pioneering efforts as a designer and forward-thinking educator for future graphic design professionals: she is leading the establishment of the West Michigan Graphic Design Archives at the Zhang Legacy Collections Center at Western Michigan University" notes Cooper Hewitt.
Peggy Ann Rohde, Tomoko Miho, Barbara Loveland, and Linda Powell are the female forces that made the brand stand out during the past and Meg Miller's article on the AIGA’s Eye on Design site, “The Lesser-told Stories of the Women Who Shaped Herman Miller” sheds some light on the women that defined an era.
