Buy Fonts Save Lives: Matt Willey redesigns & donates typefaces for life
Founded by Paul Harpin and curated by Typespec, Buy Fonts Save Lives sells typefaces to raise money to support Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.
The charity venture is the brainchild of Paul Harpin of Londontype.co.uk & Ampersand.Media and former creative director at Haymarket Media Group, and is curated by Joe Graham of Typespec.
The fund-raising project was inspired by Harpin’s niece Laura, who sadly died aged just 26. After the incident, Harpin created a new typeface family to sell in her memory.
Eventually, other type designers and experts kindly joined in to help raise funds and Matt Willey is one of the many creatives who support Type for Life.
Pentagram’s patner Willey has designed the initiative’s brand new website which was built by Sam Morgan with assistance from Pentagram’s Adriana Ji & Typespec’s Joe Graham.

Designer Anastasia Kharchenko has created a fab animation to accompany the launch of the new site that illustrates beautifully both the form and functionality of the venture online.
Matt Willey has also kindly donated a further five type families to boost the campaign and raise more money for Macmillan & Cancer Research.
His popular BFSL fonts Timmons NY & MFred have been updated and his new donations include a striking slab serif (Blakey), a bold stencil face (AType) and a friendly rounded sans (BWord), all reworked for release in 2021 with assistance from Diana Ovezea.
Other fonts at Buy Fonts Save Lives include Nick Cooke’s Organon & Paul Harpin’s Laura, the typeface he designed in memory of his niece which became the foundation of the BFSL campaign.
The classically elegant Grace Roman is the second donation by BFSL founder Harpin.
As noted More fonts will be added to the site in due course and all proceeds go to the charities.
