Type Foundries Today is a living document
“The literature on type foundries is not extensive” says Ruxandra Duru. “Although the theoretical studies I summarize here help us understand how type foundries emerged after the digital revolution and hint at the present and future of the industry, a more recent, thorough examination has not been undertaken until now” she adds. It all started back in August 2011, when Duru embarked on a thorough study of the type industry, interviewed twenty-four foundries and published the results as her thesis for her master’s in advanced typography at EINA, Barcelona. Thanks to Typographica’s Stephen Coles who upon reading the report asked if she’d be interested in updating it and publishing it on the site, Duru’s report is available to all. The updated edition of Type Foundries Today “is completely revised, the historical timeline extended, the census of foundries expanded” Coles commented. Offering insight into the sometimes obscure world of typeface drawing and font making with in‑depth analysis of contemporary foundries, the state of the type industry today can be reached here.
