Football Type finally revealed itself
There is no denial that this book has totally caught our attention, and there is a female talking here, so get enthousiastic twice. We're talking about the first archive of football type, designed by Face37's co-founder Rick Banks, co-authored by the writer Sheridan Bird. "Football Type" is (was) a non profit book in limited edition, which explores the five wonderful different covers, focusing on the weird and beautiful ways in which fonts and football intersect from Gaudi’s influence on Barcelona’s shirt numbers to Maradona’s famous “10”. Mr. Banks has compiled a fascinating look at football type, working for two years on it, he has bridged the distance between those two fields, football & design. It was a procedure that first involved the collection of official typefaces and then the contact with people who were involved in designing footbal lettering and in this way things started to get on their way. All proceeds from the book will go to the UK charity Football Foundation, which funds sports facilities and grassroots projects. Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea, England, Liverpool, The FA, Adidas, PUMA, Umbro and Nike all contributed to the project, and the book was sponsored by Identity Print, Winter Company, Sporting ID and Tom Duncalf, who built the Football Type website. Unfortunately, all the copies with their customized covers using Premier League lettering, are long gone. And it's only natural as there were only 1000 of them while the interest was huge. So, we are now left with the hope of a republishing in the near future.
